4 Steps to Find the Best Products to Sell on Amazon

So you’ve finally decided to push your luck on Amazon. Perhaps you’re a new retail arbitrage seller who is searching for the next set of products to sell on Amazon. Or maybe you’re a seasoned Amazon retailer wanting to increase your store’s product variety to further boost sales and profit margin.

But now you’re stuck. With tons of product ideas available on the internet, it is so easy to get overwhelmed, causing you to hop from one product concept to another.

I’ve been in the same position and I know how frustrating it is. Luckily, I came up with a four-step guide to arrive with the most profitable products to sell on Amazon without wasting so much time on the product research.

How to find products to sell on Amazon for 2020?

1. Condition your mind
I know you have that big question mark on your face right now. But if you want to make this Amazon product research successful, you have to loosen up a bit. Otherwise, you will end up like so many other frustrated product researchers that are still running around a loophole in spite of trying out all the methods given by online gurus.

Nope, it’s not just about the Amazon product method they’re using but more often, they’re sabotaging your thoughts.

So before delving deep into the hunt, I would like to point out two of the most common mistakes for why most people fail in their product research since there’s a great chance you’d fall in the same trap they did.

Things to keep in mind when looking for products to sell on Amazon

No product is perfect.

Of course, you’d always want the best product for your store. Lots of folks are crippled with this “perfect product paralysis”. But there is really no such thing as a “perfect product”. Cons will always be at the other side of the pros.

Your job, therefore, is to list the good and probable products you’ll gain from your research, assess them one by one, and choose the one that best fits your personal criteria of profitability.

Too much information could lead to confusion.

It’s very disappointing when you feel like everybody else has figured it out but you. So instead, you tend to digest all the information available to you, trying to solve the puzzle but instead end up more perplexed.

Too much information can often lead you to confusion, and therefore lack of confidence. So try to stick with the whole process first and just trust the research. The trick is to develop your actions one task at a time.

Now that you’re in a clear head space, let’s discover the actual ways to find the best products to sell on Amazon.

2. Find the best products to sell on Amazon by doing effective product research

In this phase, I encourage you to grab a pen and paper or a digital notepad to record the good product keywords you’ll find. But first, let’s discuss what is an Amazon product keyword and why it is important.

What is an Amazon product keyword?

To give you an overview, an Amazon product keyword is the exact word or phrase people use to look up what they’re searching for on Amazon. It’s the same idea when you type something on Google. Even without typing the whole phrase, Google is already giving you some suggestions because apparently, others have already searched them too!

The same thing happens on Amazon. People go in there to find some products and the ones having the most search are shown as suggested products.

How do you do product research on Amazon?

Of course, since you’re looking to sell on Amazon, the best place you should go is Amazon itself. Just type in some words and take note of the suggestions.

Here’s an example. I went to the Amazon website and typed in “organic ba”. The one in my mind was “organic baby food” yet apparently, most people are searching for that as well! In fact, it’s currently one of the top suggested searches.

And if you happen to notice, there are a lot more suggestions below which also have high search volume. These are the exact keywords you’ll find in keywording tools as well. The very advantage of using keywording tools, however, is the data they provide. But don’t worry, we’ll discuss that later on.

Now that you understand the essence of an Amazon product keyword, you should be able to craft out the best words to start with. If you have no idea of what product to search, you can start looking at the Amazon Best Seller Page and see the currently most popular products and product categories based on sales.

At this moment, the top products involve the following categories:

  • DVD & Blu-ray
  • Electronics & Photo
  • Software
  • Books
  • CDs and Vinyl
  • Toys and Games

The Amazon bestseller niches can already give you a hint of the best products to sell on Amazon. Take note, however, that this part is updated hourly so the most popular products now could drastically change in the next hour.

But to give you an overview, here are the top-selling products that rarely go out of Amazon’s best-seller category:

What are the top-selling items on Amazon this 2020?

  • Home & Kitchen
  • Health & Personal Care
  • Sports & Outdoors
  • Beauty
  • Toys & Games
  • Pet Supplies
  • Home Improvement
  • Office Products
  • Baby stuff

You can also generate ideas for the best products to sell on Amazon by looking at the following:

  • Amazon Storefronts
  • Amazon’s Movers & Shakers
  • Amazon Basics
  • Amazon’s Sponsored Products, Frequently Bought Together, and Customers Also Bought sections
  • Looking at other online selling platform’s best-seller and trendling list like eBay, AliExpress, and Etsy

Alternatively, you can also use Amazon keyword tools like keywordtool.io to see the other related product keywords to your search.

The very reason why you need to know those product keywords is to assess whether they’re high demand and at the same time, have lower competition. This is one of the best keys to finding successful products on Amazon. As the universal law of economics suggests, high demand with low supply will give you a higher chance to stand out in your product niche.

Now, if you already listed a number of good Amazon product ideas to target, you can move on to the next step.

3. Track competition and trends

To find the high demand with low competition product ideas, you can use online keywords tools. Most of these tools, however, are paid. But for this example, I’m using SEMScoop, a free online tool that analyzes keyword difficulty, competition, and search seasonality.

Say you found in your previous product research that “electric knife sharpener” is one of the best products to sell on Amazon. After typing in that keyword, here’s what you’ll see:

The data suggests that this product keyword has a good search volume and moderate competition, thus giving you a good chance to compete with other sellers.

If you go to Amazon and find products for electric knife sharpener, you’ll see that the Presto 08800 EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener sits on top. Now, you can examine that product, read the bad reviews, and perhaps find one good electric sharpener product that could address the issue you mostly found on the bad reviews.

Looking at the sponsored products will also give you another hint.

If you notice that there are lots of sponsored products for the certain product idea you’re looking for, then there’s a high probability that this certain product idea is profitable enough. It should be a good reason why marketers are willing to shave off a significant amount for advertising their items.

Now that you’ve found the best probable products to sell on Amazon, let’s move on to the last and the most important step you should take, and that is assessing your product picks.

4. Assess your product picks

Finding good products to sell on Amazon does not end with picking the best product keywords or specific product categories. In fact, it is just the beginning.

You should consider several factors to assess the profitability of your product picks, especially if you’re an Amazon retail arbitrage seller, where you buy items in retail stores and sell them online through Amazon. Otherwise, your items will be stuck in inventory and all the efforts you’ve done from the start will be deemed useless.

How to find profitable products to sell on Amazon?

  1. Determine your selling price.
Look at the other competing products in your target niche and notice the average price most people are buying. You can charge within the price limit or better yet, charge lower than usual if you can while taking into account the Amazon selling fees.
  2. Evaluate the method of product’s storage and acquisition
As much as possible, refrain from picking products that are too risky to handle and ship. Aside from the bad reviews, replacing damaged products can be very costly. Products that are hazardous and fragile to ship also have an increased shipping cost.
  3. Consider the seasonality of products
Selling trendy products is a good marketing technique. But if you constantly try to keep up on the recent trend, it will surely be exhausting.

So instead, you might want to eye products which are in demand all-year round. In which case, Google trends will help you assess whether there is a sustained search volume of your product picks for the entire year.

Take into account the purchase frequency of the product

It is always cheaper and more sustainable to retain customers than acquire new ones. One way to do this is to pick products which are often repurchased.

But know that this isn’t always the case.

Proper branding can also help you retain your old customers. So even if you’re releasing another item on your niche, as long as they trust your brand, people will be more likely to purchase it.

Conclusion

If you happen to finish this guide and still find it a struggle to type in some product ideas, you might as well find the ones that you and other people are passionate about. Perhaps it can be finance books or sportsware.

It will surely be an edge if you have a personal attachment to the products you’re selling. Who knows, you might even be able to craft a personal brand and an emotional story out of it that will make you stand out among the other competitors in your niche.

One way to promote your own brand is to create an Amazon Storefront. If you have no experience in building a website, feel free to check out our Brand Page Builder Service. From your brand logo to your amazing product images and videos, we’ve got it all covered.

Overall, the product research process can be very time consuming so I highly suggest seeking help from the same people who have already figured the way out of the confusion.
