Amazon Conferences & Networking Events
There are a number of options when it comes to Amazon conferences now. They take place at all times of the year and in various parts of the country. But is it worth your time and money to attend these conferences? That is usually the biggest question we hear from sellers who are looking to connect but aren’t sure if it’s going to be worth it. In this episode of the Amazon Seller Podcast, Andy Slamans & Liran Hirschkorn give their personal experiences with networking events and why they think they are valuable.
Amazon Conferences Help Sellers Open Up
While you may be “Facebook friends” with other sellers, Facebook interactions are never quite the same as meeting someone face-to-face. When sellers meet at conferences there is a level of trust that is established that is very difficult to do online. Because of this, I have personally learned some great tips & strategies from sellers that they never would have shared with me outside of a conference. Vice versa, I have shared information with other sellers (like what private label products I sell) that I just met at a conference because there is a level of trust that gets established.
The Value Of Networking Is Often The Best Part
One of the concerns that I had when I first started attending conferences is that I wouldn’t pick up enough valuable information from the speakers. I’ve heard this same concern echoed by many other sellers who haven’t attended an Amazon conference yet. This is never a concern for me anymore. That’s because the true value of attending conferences for me is the relationships I build and strengthen while there. Just hanging out at lunch or dinner after the sessions is over is incredibly valuable. If you are going to attend a conference, I highly encourage you to meet as many people there as you can. Ask them where they live, how long they have been selling, what got them started selling on Amazon; whatever you need to do to start small talk and form a relationship.
Many partnership opportunities begin at Amazon conferences. I personally have developed 3 different product partnerships with people that I met at conferences and they have all been extremely valuable. Again, it is hard enough to share some of your best practices with people you have only met online. Harder still is developing a functioning partnership. When you meet face-to-face with someone this becomes much more realistic.
The Golden Nuggets
You don’t need to pick up a 100 pieces of information to make an Amazon conference valuable. One golden nugget can be a game-changer for your entire business. If you talk to the right person, pick up one new sourcing strategy, discover a tool that you have been in desperate need of, etc.. it can make it all worth it. Don’t try to learn it all at a conference, try to pick up a couple of good actionable tips you can use to improve your business.
Don’t Isolate Yourself & Your Business
Running your own business (especially an e-commerce business) can be isolating at times. If you don’t have a friend or supportive spouse that you can talk to about Amazon, it can get lonely at times. The great thing about a seller meet-up is that everyone is interested in selling things online! Everyone wants to talk about Amazon and everyone is interested in what you do. Because they do it too (or something similar)!
Get Inspired and Motivated
The inspiration and comradeship you get just from being around other sellers can change your business. I always leave an Amazon conference hyped up and ready to take my business up a few notches. Use the motivation of other sellers’ success to fuel your goals and work harder than ever to achieve them!
Conferences Aren’t the Only Answer
Don’t have the funds currently to make an Amazon conference work? That’s OK! There are local ecommerce meetups that happen all over the country. Look for a Facebook group targeted towards your State or reach out nearby sellers in a group. This is an awesome way to connect with other sellers in an affordable way. In fact, I know of an Amazon meetup that accord early 2017 with over 100 sellers in attendance that came from all over the country. It wasn’t even an official conference, but with a little bit of planning and determination they made it happen.
